Do you play shareware games?
There are a lot of cool games in the shareware / freeware market that are really fun to play. Course I'm from the old school who likes a good puzzle better than a shootem up. But there are a lot of those as well. One of my favorites is Big Jig, it's a jigsaw puzzle game that really works like a real game (without losing the pieces). They have hundreds of pictures for it and if you register it, you can make your own puzzles.
